Creative expression takes many forms. A visual artist sees the nuanced hues of a sunset, while the composer hears the movement of the light dancing on the horizon. A songwriter paints the story of an ocean with words and a melody, while a child scribbles deep blue swirls and a big orange ball onto a Crayola canvas.
Faith is creative expression. To see the mystery of God is to take in a love that defies a two-dimensional rendering. At best, you find words, you do good deeds, you live a good life, but it is the inexplicable something that tells the real story. Our narrative as people of God, as the Church, is told in the truth between the lines, between the details. It is the Spirit, the intangible Spirit, that moves like a whisper of wind through our lives and reveals the meaning of it all.
How ironic, then, that God created us with five senses to experience the tangible. My thought of a beautiful tree is realized when my eyes behold its swaying branches, or my hands touch the textured bark and compliant leaves. Likewise, my thought of a beautiful YOU is realized when I see you and accept you for who you are, where you are right now. When I cry your tears with you, take your side against storms of rejection and fear, celebrate your joy and success with you. Through all these visible touchable things, I could still never quite describe YOU to someone. Words fall short and become books judged by covers. The scripture says Jesus knew what was in the hearts of the people around Him. So do we, really, if we care to notice…and listen.
God sees you. When Jesus shared our human experience, He did more than participate in the mundane day in day out. He breathed Life into those details by emphasizing the heart of it all. Why bother being human at all if it is only to pay bills and sweep floors?
Life is creative expression, and every detail of life is an opportunity to awaken to the innocence behind the swirls on the Crayola canvas.
As you do life this week, I pray that the fresh wind of the Holy Spirit will animate your days and moments with the joy of being you, created in His image. We live and move and have our being before a backdrop of Heavenly purpose.
Together, we are the creative expression of God’s love.
Much love,
Pastor Kim
